Experimenting with Double Brioche

A friend of mine knit a hat with a 2x2 Brioche Rib Cuff (Double Brioche). It fascinated me, so I decided to knit up some swatches experimenting with the technique.

First off, some terminology. It helps to be familiar with single brioche.

BRK2Knit each stitch individually with the yarn over. Knit the first stitch with the yarn over, moving the just worked stitch to the right needle, but keeping the yarn over on the left needle. Knit the second stitch and its yarn over, moving to the right needle.
BRP2Purl each stitch individually with the yarn over. Purl the first stitch with the yarn over, moving the just worked stitch to the right needle, but keeping the yarn over on the left needle. Purl the second stitch and its yarn over, moving to the right needle.
SL2YOBring yarn forward, Slip 2 stitches individually purlwise, Yarn over. The yarn over "wraps around the 2 slipped stitches
LC, DCLight Color, Dark Color. This is a means to distinguish the two colors.
WS, RSWrong Side of the work, Right side of the work.

The Swatches

Single Color Double Brioche, Knitted Flat
My first swatch was double brioche, knitted flat. I cast on with German Twisted Cast on and knit 4 rows in 2x2 rib. I began my double brioche as follows:
Row 1: K2, *SL2YO, BRK2*, repeat from * to * until last 4 stitches, SL2YO, K2
Row 2: P2, *BRK2, SL2YO*, repeat until last 4 stitches, BRK2, P2
Finish with 6 rows of 2x2 rib. Bind off with Judy's Surprisingly Stretchy bind off.

The first picture shows the swatch as knit. The second picture shows the swatch stretched out to show the detail between the knit columns.

Note: when transitioning from a round that ends with a SL2YO to a round that starts with a SL2YO, just drop the working yarn before the yarn over. When you com back around pick up the dropped yarn (The working yarn is a different color now.) and "complete" the yarnover by wrapping the yarn around the 2 stitches and hold it there. Complete your BRK2 or BRP2 with the working yarn.
